Here’s our compact digital workhorse -the Solus Scanner. As posted last week, “back in the day” ignition system diagnosis was largely about analog technology…the ability to read oscilloscope waveforms. Today’s auto technicians are still expected to be able to read various waveforms but in addition to that they must be comfortable with digital diagnostics. A common question with electronic diagnosis at our shop is, “What is the [vehicle’s] computer saying [or seeing]?” Sometimes the vehicle computer “sees” the correct problem. Sometimes it has no clue at all with what’s going on. And other times the vehicle computer [Electronic Control Unit] is very much confused. Bottom line? There is no replacement for a good tech who knows how to do pinpoint testing!
